Ensign Resignation to Spark Political Tsunami in Nevada
Embattled Senator John Ensign (R-Nev.) announced today he will resign from office, according to a story first reported by The Las Vegas Sun’s Jon Ralston. Ensign has been fighting a senate ethics committee investigation into a 2009 adultery and corruption scandal. Ensign announced last March that he would not seek reelection and – in a statement on his web site – insists he’s done nothing wrong:

Embattled Senator John Ensign (R-Nev.) announced today he will resign from office, according to a story first reported by The Las Vegas Sun’s Jon Ralston. Ensign has been fighting a senate ethics committee investigation into a 2009 adultery and corruption scandal. Ensign announced last March that he would not seek reelection and – in a statement on his web site – insists he’s done nothing wrong:

“While I stand behind my firm belief that I have not violated any law, rule, or standard of conduct of the Senate, and I have fought to prove this publicly, I will not continue to subject my family, my constituents, or the Senate to any further rounds of investigation, depositions, drawn out proceedings, or especially public hearings. For my family and me, this continued personal cost is simply too great.”

The resignation will take effect May 3, according to his web site. The next move belongs to Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval (R). Political insiders are widely saying that the governor will appoint GOP Congressman Dean Heller to serve the remainder of Ensign’s term. Heller was already running for Ensign’s seat. But the shake-up doesn’t end there. Here’s Fox News Capitol Hill producer Chad Pergram’s take on one possible chain of events:

“If the governor does tap Heller, the Republican party process will choose who they nominate for the special election to Heller's House seat where failed senatorial candidate Shar[r]on Angle (R) is running.

It's possible Angle could then petition to be the independent candidate.

Heller's district is the largest and most rural in Nevada and is the part of the state where the tea party has the best support.”
