With three weeks until the South Carolina primary, Republican presidential contender, Mitt Romney hired veteran South Carolina consultants, reports The State.

The Romney camp took on Warren Tompkins and Luke Byars to boost Romney’s presence in the final weeks.

Tompkins credentials include guiding four Republican candidates to victory in the Palmetto state including Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole and George W. Bush. Byars is a former executive director of the S.C. Republican Party and a state director for U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint.

Both previously worked for Romney in his 2008 bid for the Republican nomination and say they are not being paid for their work leading up to South Carolina’s first Tuesday primary.

“Sometimes it’s not always about money, but doing what you think is right and what is best for the things you believe in,” Tompkins said.

Tompkins also said that while the Massachusetts governor has frustrated conservatives by waffling on key Republican issues, Romney is the only candidate qualified to lead the nation out of its economic crisis.

“People need to vote with their head, not necessarily with their heart,” Tompkins said. “If we don’t straighten out America’s financial mess, all of the other stuff we care about on a social basis won’t matter.”
