Camp Romney Walks Back Israel Aid Comments

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s campaign walked back controversial comments about Israel made during Saturday’s foreign policy debate, when the former Massachusetts governor seemed to support starting the ally’s aid package at zero, AFP reports.

“Mitt Romney firmly believes that the United States must continue supporting Israel and increase military aid to our strongest friend and ally,” Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul wrote in an email. “Governor Romney was talking about Pakistan when he said the foreign aid each year should start at zero.”

During Saturday’s “Commander in Chief” debate sponsored by CBS News and The National Journal, Romney said in response to a question about Pakistan that “one of the things we have to do with our foreign aid commitments, the ongoing foreign aid commitments – I agree with Governor Perry. You start everything at zero.”

Perry’s campaign also clarified their candidate’s comments in a post-debate statement describing him as “a friend to Israel” who “understands the challenges faced by the country,” which is “a unique and vital political and economic partner for the United States.”
