Bachmann Files for New Hampshire Primary
GOP candidate Michele Bachmann is the only major candidate to file for the New Hampshire GOP primary by mail, reports CBS News
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House speaker Newt Gingrich, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum all filed in person. Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Georgia businessman Herman Cain sent their staff in their place. Bachmann’s by-mail filing is presumed to be the result of the campaign’s recent loss of all of its New Hampshire staffers.
Karen Testerman, a recently unpaid adviser to the campaign, told CBS News/National Journal that she was asked by Bachmann’s national campaign adviser Keith Nahigian to file the Minnesota congresswoman’s paperwork in New Hampshire. Testerman said she informed Nahigian that as unpaid staff, she was unauthorized to do so.
Two of Bachmann’s former New Hampshire staff members have since joined rival campaigns, while the campaign, stuck at single digits in the polls, continues to struggle to remain viable.
Bachmann announced on Wednesday a three-day swing through eastern Iowa that will begin on Friday and include two church addresses. While the tour will appeal to socially-conservative voters, a lack of campaign staff in New Hampshire will make it difficult to capitalize on Iowa primary gains.
