Perry Looks Ahead to Possible Matchup with Pres. Obama in Sunday Talk Show Debut

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry offered some tough talk about a possible general election debate matchup with President Obama during his Sunday talk show debut on Fox News Sunday, The Washington Post reports.

“I’m not worried a bit that I’ll be able to stand on the stage with Barack Obama and draw a very bright line,” Perry said. “We got a great debater, a smooth politician in the White House right now, that’s not working really good for America.”

Perry’s Sunday appearance came as a new Des Moines Register poll showed the Texas governor facing an uphill climb with GOP voters in Iowa. According to the new survey published Saturday, Perry is tied for fifth with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, each with 7 percent.

Perry also defended his flat tax proposal against accusations that it would bring in trillions of dollars less in revenue than the current tax code.

“There’s nothing wrong with lower revenue,” he said. “I don’t want more revenue in Washington, D.C.’s hands. I want more revenue in the private sector job creators’ hands.”

Perry’s 20 percent flat tax plan is also getting positive feedback from one high-profile leader of the Tea Party movement. Speaking on ABC’s This Week, FreedomWorks chairman Dick Armey offered glowing support for the proposal, Newsmax reports.

“The flat tax has proven to be the best growth engine for the economy,” said the former Republican House majority leader. “Incomes go up for everybody, and you treat everybody the same. I don’t understand why all these romantic egalitarians out there hanging around the left wing of American politics can’t accept that fair is treating everybody exactly the same as everybody else. We have a grotesquely unfair and brutal tax system that represses the economy and is destructive to our spirit.”
