Herman Cain Accuses Democrats of Taking ‘Race Card to a New Low’
Presidential candidate Herman Cain blasted Democrats Wednesday for taking the “race card to a new low” on Fox News News Channel, The Hill reports.
Cain’s comments were in response to Rep. Andre Carson’s (D-Ind.) comments accusing tea party-backed members of Congress of racism against African Americans.
“Some of these folks in Congress right now would love to see us as second class citizens,” Carson said at a town hall meeting in Miami on August 22. “Some of them in Congress in this tea party movement would love to see you and me, I’m sorry . . . hanging on a tree.”
“It was despicable, it was disgusting and it was desperate,” the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza and tea party favorite told Greta Van Susteren. “You see, the Democrats have not results to run on, they have no plans that are working. The president doesn’t have any plans that are working; he’s broken a lot of promises. All they have left . . . is name-calling . . . They have taken the race card to a new low. And it’s going to backfire because the American people are sick and tired of the race card and the class warfare card.”
Cain also accused Democrats of playing by “double standards” on issues of race and challenged President Obama to take a stand against this type of rhetoric.
“[W]here is this heir of civility that the president called for?” Cain asked. “Now, since the president is the head of the Democrat party, he should say something against those remarks. It’s his responsibility but I doubt whether or not he’s going to say anything about those remarks. ”
