Tea Party Express Backs Challenger to Indiana Sen. Lugar
The Tea Party Express, the organization that backed candidates like Sharron Angle, Joe Miller, and Christine O’Donnell is back in action, reports the
Los Angeles Times.
The California-based group has backed Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock in his bid to unseat Republican Sen. Richard G. Lugar. Tea Party Express chair Amy Kremer said in a statement Thursday, “He (Mourdock) understands the importance of putting an end to Washington's wild spending and skyrocketing debt.”
Six-term senator Lugar is the most senior Republican in the senate and the ranking member of the Foreign Relations committee. Many tea party activists cite Lugar’s support of Wall Street bailouts as good cause to question Lugar’s conservative values.
The Tea Party Express also cited “an attitude of disdain for the tea party movement” among the reasons for its decision to support Lugar’s opponent.
While Mourdock welcomed the endorsement, Lugar campaign director David Willkie said in reponse to the Tea Party Express’s decision, “Sen. Lugar has been active and involved with people in Indiana and tea parties in Indiana, and it’s unfortunate that this outside group is trying to co-opt and tell people in Indiana what to think.”
